The Plan

I am writing this post as I have decided that I am going to be a more regular blogger in 2016, Well you can say it is my new year resolution to be a top blogger within the next year. At top of what will be decided at the end of the year.

As I mentioned in my last blog ( & also in a few posts before that), I have no damn idea on where my journey leads to. I am kinda stuck like a broken record.

So where do I go from here, what is the plan? The question is whose plan?

Do we know the plan of the universe?

In many of our cultures ( including Star wars universe), there is a concept of a unifying force. Some people call it the God, The creator, Holy Trinity, The Eywa or simply The Force. This force is so great that it will guide us to our destiny. It will test our resolve on the way, but will prepare us for the mountains ahead.

Many of our efforts will be futile if we are not aware of our hidden force.

So where do we find the unifying soul of the universe which will guide us to our destiny.

In Avatar, they had the Giant tree of souls, In star wars you go to Master Yoda (or rather the Jedi scout for the Young Padawans)

It seems things are a bit different on the planet Earth.

Do I look outside or do I look inside my heart? Do I need a mentor or a guide, or do I need to pray and reflect?

This reminds me of the story of the wise sage of sages, who advises the young man looking for wisdom

“The Secret of Happiness lies in looking at all the wonders of the world and never forgetting the two drops of oil in the spoon.”

I hope someday I will be able to do it. May be that will be the day when I will start getting connected to the Soul & start my journey towards my pyramids & my sycamore tree.

May the force be with me

"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest."

The soul of Universe

Last week i finished reading "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho once again.

Every time I read this book, its a new experience. For those who are not familiar with the book, it is a story of a boy who decides to go on a journey to find a treasure he saw in his dreams and in the process discovers his destiny & the soul of universe.

He finds the treasure at the place where he began his journey, but to realize that he has to go through a lot of hardship & struggles. He learns new trades, gets robbed, has a few close brushes with death, travels a lot & meets the love of his life.

All along he is guided by omens which he calls as the language of the universe. The omens talk to him because he is connected to the soul of the universe which resides in every particle. The reason  omens talk to him is because he tries to listen to them, follows them.

Many times in the story he reaches crossroads where giving up on his dream is more lucrative than following it but he listens to the omens keeps following them. He goes through a process of self doubt, despair, hopelessness but still decides to continue on the journey as during those moments of weakness he still listens to his soul & the omens.

What I find most inspirational in this book is the fact that this is an universal story. When we are young, we have a dream, an inspiration which we can call our own. but some where along the way we just stop responding to the signals & the omens. We stop enjoying the journey & get too much focused on the goal. We get disconnected from our soul. That day we stop progressing towards our own journey & become a part of someone else's journey.

Some people keep listening to the inner voice & reach where they find the real happiness. They keep enjoying the journey they are on.

Many times we think that we are struggling to find happiness but when we reach our goals we do not find happiness as the journey we were on was not ours. We were just like sheep who just blindly follow the shepherd & make his journey our own.

So what is my Personal Legend, my Dream, my passion, my hidden treasure.

I have no damn idea on how my story will end in the world. I envy those who have found such a destination.

I have started on the journey, Hopefully I will find my treasure one day.

Inside out- my thoughts

Joy and sadness always remain together.  They are the best buddies.  Just joy or sadness alone does not lead to development of the deepest and profound emotions and thought. Only when they come together that they create a deep emotional tag to the memories. This tag creates us, our being our personality and then guides our actions.

The guide to our being is to look deep inside us, realise that we are not just looking for joy.  Just happiness cannot make us complete.

So the question is are we really looking to be happy.  Or just complete.

Comparing Apple & Oranges (Android) -- Its all in the mind

Choices define people who make them.

This is a small attempt to understand people on the basis of technological choices they make.
So what better way to categorize people than the device they hold in their hands the whole day. The omnipresent Smartphone.

Today's hyper-connected world can be broadly categorized into 2 categories, Apple Fans & the Android fans. ( I am yet to find to Windows phone fan & blackberry is moving to Android soon).

Both camps have their lovers & haters. Everyone has a perfectly valid reason to think what they are thinking & do what they are doing.

Lets start with iPhone users.

iPhones are supposed to be easy to use, no learning curve, lack of customisation features( apart from phone covers), a brand value,  are good looking, no features which are considered as revolutionary & use of technology which is always tried & tested ( no surprises). On the top of it all,  severe restrictions which do not let you move out of the Apple walled garden.

Most of the people who like Apple ( I am not talking about the fanatic fans) are usually who are brand conscious. Many of them respect authority like a god. Many prefer order over anything else even if it means making compromises. Usually Apple fans are not adventurous. They try hard to blend in with the masses & anything which makes them stand out makes them uncomfortable.

So what about android phones.

Each phone company has unique imprint on the Vanilla android versions which brings a variety to the Android Garden. Hence there is a learning curve involved when you switch your phone. Some of the phones are not so good looking & many times the difference in the quality is so much that most of the time it is not fair to compare 2 android phones.
Some of these phones have features which are very new, not properly tested, some of the features are impractical & some are totally ridiculous. Most of the android phones are totally customisable ( i am talking about the software part).

Android users are usually rebels, ( or they just wish deep down that they were one). Most of them are not brand conscious. They don't despise authority as such but they have certain values which they cannot compromise ( hence you see a different variety of phones with different features, appealing to different users).
Many of the android users stand out from the crowd just by the virtue of being different from the rest.
They are not averse to trying new things although they may not be totally comfortable with them & not sure whether they are doing the right thing. That can sometimes lead to unwanted consequences. They do not regret it.

There is a third category of people who switch Apple to android or vice-versa. Many of them remain with the new choice & some go back to the original. Those were the ones who lost there way due to influence of some fans, but have now found there way back to where they belong.

Everybody deserves the phone they are using as it is the end result of all the Values & biases they have accumulated over their lifetime.

Disclaimer-- I am an Android User in case you have not guessed it by now.

Why do I procrastinate

This is what you get on your screen when you google procrastination.
 procrastination
[proh-kras-tuh-ney-shuh n, pruh‐]
noun
noun: procrastination; plural noun: procrastinations
  1. the action of delaying or postponing something.
"your first tip is to avoid procrastination"
synonyms:dithering, delaying tactics, dilatoriness, stalling, temporizing, hesitation, vacillation
    humming and hawing;
    informaldilly-dallying, shilly-shallying;
informalkicking the can down the road

Almost every Human being who is alive would have committed this act at one time or another in our life. Some people do it more than others. Some are pros in the act while others have just started. While a few lucky ones would have left this habit far behind.

I confess I am a procrastinator, my wife thinks I am lazy ( there is a fine line which is difficult to discern at  times, I am also lazy sometimes ).

I have been trying to unravel the mystery of procrastination. So I googled "why do we procrastinate" & "procrastination Vs Laziness" and Mr Google prompt as always came up with countless links for me to guzzle.
In most of the pages I read there was a recurrent theme, we procrastinate because we want to succeed.
But when we procrastinate we are moving towards failure ( most of the time).

So why on earth do we do the thing we do.

it seems that we procrastinate when we are trying to avoid the pain of a deemed failure in our minds. Our rational mind comes out with a reason to do a totally random non urgent trivial thing as there is no fear of failure in that ( as we have done that countless times). This random trivial act releases endorphins in our brain & gives us a high. This further coaxes our rational minds to come out with excuses to further delay the act which we are procrastinating & the cycle keep repeating itself.

So why do we have the fear of failure in the first place?
I don't have any concrete answers but my observations & readings suggest that it may be the result of how our society & education is designed & functions. We despise innovation & failure ( despite of all the leaders & politicians saying that we need more innovation). Right from the very beginning there is always only one correct way to do a thing. So when we are trying to do things in which we are not the complete masters ( which includes most of the things we do in our daily lives), we have a doubt in our minds " Is my way correct?" Unless what we want to do has been validated by some one which includes blogs, friends, family members, colleagues, we are doubtful of ourselves & the outcomes. this produces a painful feeling bought about years of schooling & "only ONE right answer" conditioning.

People have come out with techniques on how to avoid procrastination like automation, reminders, fixing times for certain things, checklists, to do lists & so on. But are we really tackling the monster of procrastination by doing it or are we just suppressing it waiting for it to manifest in other forms.

I am still searching for an answer.

A prayer

I am a bit scared today.
I fear the unknown.
I took a decision & acted on it. There are some outcomes I did not visualize when I acted.

I spoke my mind, Why? what did I gain from it.
Did I just want to win the war of words, against someone whom I do not know at all, A face in the crowd.
Or may be I thought I can change the world.

Can I bring light to the world by saying a few words, may be if the words are of wisdom & not of an argument.
But am I wise enough to understand that.
The ego inside me, made me do it, the Race to win the arguments, to always win the war of the words.

My ego is not letting me achieve the wisdom. But I hope to do it one day.

Will I do the same thing again?
May be,  but the reason may be different.

May Lord Give me courage & wisdom to understand the difference.

The search For happiness

The Search for Happiness

I am yet to meet a human being who is not searching for the elusive happiness. Some countries are apparently more happier than others. The little red dot I call home is supposed to be the unhappiest in the world.
But what is happiness, where do you find it, how do you define it?
Is it related to money, power, Family life, career success or some other factor?
I have embarked on this journey for a few years, met a few people, got drunk, picked up few fights, played MMORPG & Farmville, wrote forum letters, read books, traded stocks & discussed my thoughts with my colleagues sitting next to me but I am still not sure whether I am any closer to my goal as compared to when I started.
Most authors say you are as happy as you think yourself to be. So you Just think & you are happy.
But is that necessarily true. If it is so simple to find happiness why is it so elusive?
Why the Humans of 2015 are not as happy as Humans of previous decades although we have the all the material comforts, including smartphones, Facebook, Whatsapp & the ever so smart "Google"

I will be fooling myself if I said that I have discovered the way to bliss. I am not even close to attaining it.

One of the realizations I have had in my journey is that all along we have been looking at "Happiness" as a destination where we have to reach one day & because we have been taught all along "No Pain, No Gain" we think that unhappiness is the key to happiness. We struggle for things which we think may bring us happiness & we are ready to bargain our happiness of today with unhappiness.

May be this is where we are going wrong.

Happiness is more like a Long One-lane road which has 2-way traffic, with twists and turns &  lots of traffic lights with confusing signals. Worse part is Google Maps is useless on this road. The only thing that works is the GPS of your soul.  This GPS needs calibration & every soul has a different model. We cannot use our friends' GPS as the route we have to take is different what our friends are going to take. Our paths may converge for a while but eventually they diverge.

So how do I calibrate this GPS & whether my GPS is already calibrated?

Meanwhile I am on this journey called life looking for a road called happiness using a broken GPS,

Wish me Luck.
